Nordic-Baltic Millimetre and Optical/NIR Astronomy Summer School
Event starts:
Mon, 14/06/2010 (All day)
Event ends:
Wed, 23/06/2010 (All day) A second Nordic-Baltic Summer School, focusing on Millimetre and Optical/NIR Astronomy, will be held in Goteborg/Onsala, from Monday June 14th to Wednesday June 23rd 2010, and will focus on "Extragalactic astronomy in the ALMA era"
This topic is timely as ALMA is expected
to enter its Early Science phase by the end of 2010. Although
concentrating on the main extragalactic science areas with ALMA, the
school will also emphasise the importance of complementary observations
at other wavebands, in particular optical/IR observations. Scientific
lectures will encompass nearby galaxies, activity in starbursts, AGNs,
Supernovae/ GRBs and galaxies in the early Universe. In addition, the
school will offer tutorials on millimeter interferometric data
reduction (mostly using the new CASA data reduction package) and on
optical/IR techniques. An essential part of the course will be the
research projects conducted in small groups which will use archive
millimetre
interferometry data, Onsala 20m single dish data and remote optical/IR
observations using the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) in La Palma. The
school will welcome about 20 students. Nordic/Baltic PhD students
working in extragalactic astronomy are especially welcome to apply.
Places are however also available to students working in other areas
who are likely in the future to make significant use of ALMA.
Attendance at the school and completion of the project will give
students higher education points to contribute to their graduate
education requirements in their home countries.
