St. Petersburg is one of the world's most beautiful cities. It was founded in 1703 by Emperor Peter the Great as his "window on the West". Although just 300 years old, St. Petersburg has a rich and exciting history, full of dramatic events and major historical figures. the city today offer to its visitors high art, lavish architecture, excellent nightlife, and extraordinary history and rich cultural traditions that have inspired and nurtured some of the modern world's greatest literature, music, and visual art. From late May to early July the nights are bright in St Petersburg, with the brightest period, the so called "White Nights" (Beliye Nochi), normally lasting from June 11th toJuly 2nd. Although the phenomenon is not unique to St Petersburg, it isprobably fair to say that in no other northern city have "white nights"received such poetic and literary acclaim.
